The comparison people usually make is the wrong one
“Can a whole house fan replace my AC?” is the question we get most, and the honest answer is no. On a 108°F July afternoon in Fresno, nothing that moves outside air into your house is going to help, because the outside air is the problem.
The useful question is different: how many hours of your cooling season is outside air actually cooler than inside air? In the Central Valley, that number is large. Fresno routinely drops from the high 90s or low 100s into the mid-60s overnight. Add spring, add fall, add every morning, and you are looking at the majority of the hours you currently run a compressor.
What each one costs to run
A typical residential central AC system draws somewhere around 3,000–5,000 watts while the compressor is running. A modern multi-speed whole house fan draws roughly 100–600 watts depending on speed — and the speed you run overnight is the low one.

The realistic overnight pattern is fifteen minutes on high to flush the house, then low until morning. That is under one kilowatt-hour for a full night. Six hours of AC to hold the same comfort is somewhere in the region of twenty. The ratio is not subtle.

The part that compounds
The overnight run is not only about the hours you are asleep. Running the fan on low all night cools the mass of the house — drywall, floors, framing, furniture. A house that starts the day at 70°F takes hours longer to climb to the point where the thermostat calls for cooling than one that started at 78°F. You are not just avoiding AC at night; you are delaying the first AC cycle of the next afternoon.
That is why owners who use the fan properly report a bigger drop in their bill than the fan’s own wattage would suggest. The saving is displaced compressor hours, not fan efficiency.
The honest limitations
- It needs open windows. If you will not open windows — security, allergies, noise — the fan is the wrong purchase.
- It needs attic venting. Undersized exhaust venting is the single most common reason a whole house fan disappoints. Fix the venting or do not buy the fan.
- It does not filter. On smoke days, close up and run the AC.
- It does not dehumidify. Rarely a limiting factor in Fresno, but it is real.
So which should you buy?
If you already have AC, the answer is almost always “add the fan.” You keep the AC for the afternoons it is genuinely needed and hand the fan the other two-thirds of the season. If you are choosing between them from scratch in the Central Valley, you need both — there are simply too many triple-digit afternoons here for ventilation alone.
