Start with the cheap checks
- Filter. A loaded filter starves the whole system. If you cannot remember changing it, that is your answer for today.
- Registers and returns. Furniture over a return, closed bedroom doors, a rug across a floor register — all of these strangle airflow in specific rooms.
- Outdoor unit. Oleander, fence panels or stacked yard equipment against the condenser cuts its ability to reject heat. It needs clear space on every side.
- Coil. A dirty evaporator or condenser coil quietly destroys capacity. This is an HVAC service call, not a DIY item.
Then check the attic, because in the Valley it is usually the attic
Here is the pattern we see constantly in Fresno and Clovis. The AC is fine. It is producing cold air and the thermostat is satisfied. But the attic above the ceiling is sitting at 145°F, and that surface is radiating heat down into every room all evening. You feel radiant heat from the ceiling even though the air temperature is genuinely 78°F.
Two things make this worse in most Valley homes:
- Ductwork in the attic. Air that left the coil at 55°F travels through a 145°F space. Any leakage or thin insulation on those runs costs you capacity before the air reaches a register.
- Blocked soffit intakes. Blown-in insulation pushed into the eaves, or soffit vents painted over, stops the attic from breathing. Heat accumulates with nowhere to go.
The rooms-are-uneven problem
If one end of the house is always five degrees warmer, you are usually looking at a duct design or duct condition issue rather than a capacity issue: a long undersized run, a crushed flex duct, or a disconnected boot sitting in the attic blowing cold air into insulation. All of these are findable, and all of them are visible from inside the attic.
We see disconnected ducts more often than people expect — frequently disturbed by whoever was in the attic last.
Where a whole house fan fits
A whole house fan does not fix a duct fault and it will not clean your coil. What it does is eliminate the evening portion of the problem entirely: instead of asking an already-struggling AC system to overcome a heat-soaked house and a 145°F attic, you flush the whole building with outside air in fifteen minutes and let the structure cool overnight.
Many customers who call us about “weak AC” discover that once the house is no longer starting each afternoon from a heat-soaked baseline, their existing AC is perfectly adequate after all.
The order we would work through it
- Filter, registers, condenser clearance — today, free.
- Attic inspection: venting, insulation coverage, duct condition.
- Fix intake and exhaust venting if it is deficient.
- Add whole house fan and/or attic ventilation.
- HVAC service call if the system still underperforms with the load reduced.
